Yorkshire, England
Why Beverley
This lovely market town has enough to entertain you for a weekend (or more!) without leaving. Still, if you’d like to explore the region, Beverley is ideally located as a launch pad to the rest of Yorkshire by car or public transport. The larger cities of Hull & York, the Yorkshire coast, stately homes, and beautiful pastoral villages are all within a short drive of the city center.
Getting There
Flights:
If you fly into London, you can reach Beverley by train in about 3 hours. If you fly into Manchester, your best bet is to rent a car or arrange for a driver to pick you up. The drive will take about 2.5 hours
Train
A quaint train station in Beverley’s city center makes arriving by train easy. You’ll likely be a short walk from your hotel or apartment, wherever you choose to stay - nothing is very far.
Car
Having a car in Beverley is a great option if you intend to do day trips through the North Yorkshire Moors or to the beautiful coastal towns like Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby. Beverley was not built with automobiles in mind, so navigating the tight streets and finding legal parking can be challenging. Our pro tip is to ensure that parking is included (or at least available) with your lodging.
Where to Stay
Hotels
Choose the Premier Inn Beverley Town Center for a modern, more budget-friendly (if less interesting) option.
For an elevated experience, choose the Kings Head, an inn, pub, and restaurant.
For a full-on posh experience, you’ll want the Beverley Arms Hotel.
Self-Catering
We prefer staying in an apartment or cottage in the city center. You can find plenty on Airbnb, VRBO, and cottages.com (make some suggestions like Fox Cottage and Lempicka).
Regardless of your choice, we again recommend that you ensure that parking is included (or at least available) with your lodging if you’re driving.
Day 1: Exploring Beverley
Breakfast
The Full English Breakfast at the Corner House is hard to beat, but Vanessa Delicatessen & Cafe and Polly’s Cafe & Tearoom are both great options whether you want the full breakfast or a lighter bite to start your day.
If you’d like something a bit faster, pop into one of several bakeries or coffee shops down Toll Gavel.
Morning Activity
If you happen to find yourself in Beverley on a Saturday morning, then there’s no question about how you should spend it – exploring Saturday Market. The area in front of the Kings Head and adjacent to the Market Cross is filled with vendors selling everything from pillow shams to delicious cheeses. Rain or shine, the market will be filled with locals buying meat and produce for their Sunday roast alongside a handful of travelers like yourself looking for treats worthy of the suitcase space.
After you’ve had your fill of the Market, wander around town to get your bearings and explore what Beverley has to offer. There are loads of shops up and down Toll Gavel, but don’t be afraid to follow an alleyway just to see where it leads and what you might find. Beverley is a very safe market town, and there are so many hidden treasures, whether it’s a quirky bit of architecture or a quaint little shop, you won’t regret an aimless wander for an hour or two.
